East of the Arch: Exploring the History and Community of East STL

Description

East St. Louis is a small industrial suburb across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, less than 8 miles from WashU, but it might as well be a different world. The goal of this excursion is to provide students with the opportunity to explore prominent neighborhoods in a historical context, engage with members of the East St. Louis community, explore grassroots organizations, and learn about critical issues facing the city through an interactive bus tour and lunch-and-learn with local service providers, community members, and activists. Upperclassmen members of the student group will accompany first year students on the excursion, which will include a light breakfast from Einsteins Bagels and lunch from a local East St. Louis Soul Food restaurant. Partners in East St. Louis is an undergraduate community service organization that aims to develop relationships with community partners, provide long-term advocacy and service opportunities for students, and develop a platform for sharing historical narratives and life stories of East St. Louis community members. We are the only student group that works with the community in East St. Louis.

This excursion will be available for up to 30 students.

Physical requirements: There will be some walking involved.
